After a sprite preview of a heavy diving suit, I ended up doing some brainstorming with the other people on IRC. Relevant log here:

TLDR: Replace Ninja with a Crazy Guy and/or Corrupted AI in a diving suit.

I could probably pull it together into something more coherent if needed, as well. Once the project is in a more playable state, I can probably code it.

The piano needs to be resprited/replaced with a pipe organ like Nemo's from 20,000 Leagues.

Also have a black monolith spawn somewhere in the deeps, with

ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS—EXCEPT EUROPA
ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE

etched into it as a reference to the sequel to 2001 A Space Odyssey. (and it would also be pretty creepy on its own)

Should everyone start with headsets? And would such a thing as the common channel exist?

I'm quite adamant against removing those in the Exodus, but in a colony where isolation is a stronger theme, the crew is divided among factions and there is some mistrust between factions and even among members of the same faction... Well, a single common channel feels odd and out of place. and restricting headsets to certain people may be worth a try.

I was thinking about that earlier today. My working plan would be:
- Headsets for the navy sector on a private encrypted channel.
- General traffic control channel for subs using vehicle radios.
- Naval subs have traffic control and navy channels.
- Station-bounced (renamed) radios being available rarely.

Another thing I had in mind was to either: remove the crew manifest, give each faction their own manifest, or make only the leaders of each faction have a full manifest. Since on a station yeh, but on a colony, you wouldn't really have a handy list of everyone around you. This also allows other factions to infiltrate other factions, so you could have an undercover petty officer in the black market or something.

I like this idea a lot, as it makes the crew less able to just automatically be like, "wait who are you???" and gives a traitor more possibilities in accessing the station, as well as assisting merc antags.
