Double post hype.

Anyways, I was talking on IRC with Techhead and a couple others, and we came up with the idea of that, when you are (at least) deep in the trenches, your radio shouldn't work. However, as a way of calling distress out to the crew, subs (or maybe diving suits? Could be an item/module) can use a sonar pulse beacon, which are just that. They tell nothing of the situation, nothing of your status, but are an emergency beacon designed so that you can call out for help while you are being eaten by monsters, your ship breaks, you run out of oxygen or whatever.

This beacon would perhaps be identified as your ship/suit/whatever, and may give rough coordinates of where you are, but it doesn't really tell anyone what the nature of emergency is. To respond to these, there would be "rescue subs" that were basically what emergency personnel would use to come and get to you.

Regarding beacons:
I'd think I'd rather the signals be semi-anonymous. Just a number that you have to reference against a logbook/sign-out-sheet. Store them all in one room, and put the log there so people can note who's in trouble. It also means that the ease of forging log entries can add to the paranoia factor. The low bandwidth of a high-power sonar pulse means that you'd basically only be able to loop something like "DB03" (for 'Distress beacon three') in morse or binary.

Either way, I do like that the idea that cross-Z textual communication isn't really a thing, and emergency beacons would be a way to facilitate that by reducing the most important need for them.

Hm, I actually agree with Techhead here. It would add another degree of paranoia and isolation to the game, and you would never know exactly who was down there, until you checked the logs. Even then, they may be forged, or someone could have forgotten to write down that they were leaving. It would also serve to give people a check they had to do before leaving, and I think that it would add to the realism here.

In regards to radios, intercoms or phones like what are currently in Medical should be a thing. So you can communicate or call for help without having to run, but not everyone has a handset. since there is a differnce between fun isolation... and not interacting with other people. and headsets and some form of communication inter department make make sense. like maitnance being able to radio each other

IMO:

Intercoms placed in a few areas, but no headsets except for specific important people; perhaps the Captain/equivalent and any head of staff equivalents would have a private channel, and everyone else would just have a few intercoms and maybe a walkie-talkie. Definitely like the idea of distress beacons being the only cross-Z communications, it adds to the isolation/paranoia/etc.

Going back to the crew manifest, you'd be able to see who is there thanks to the handy dandy PDAs unless they turn off the pager. And you better not say remove PDA messaging.

So remove the job next to their name on the PDA messenger.

Note: This'll be edited if/when I think of something else, newest submissions will be at the bottom of their respective catagory.

emme open up my head and see what Antag comes out, or more accurately throw shit at the wall and see what sticks.

Antagonists/Events
Fishmen -Repurpose the Aramlis into mutated fishmen that think they're deep ones, but aren't actually.
Living Flesh - Use the Living Flesh as an antag. Having looked at the code, the Living Flesh uses a reskined Cosmic being as it's sprite, might be worth changing to something better - no idea if it's code works.
Aliens - A submersible docks at the Outpost without asking permission, there is no crew aboard. Three player-controlled stowaway Alien Facehuggers are inside it.
Forerunner - Mining accidentally discover a previously unidentifed Ancient-one spacecraft, aboard there are prison-like pods containing different species, almost like a zoo.. But where's the crew?
Parasite - Read: Cortical Borers from Baycode.
Space Worm - A space worm is detected in one of Outpost 13's crew modules, wreaking havoc. Already exists in the code, should be renamed to be more applicable.
Zen Crystal - An alternative power source has been found! How does it work? Who knows! Let's try shooting energy at it, what could go wrong?
Collector - An invisible speachless otherworldy being has interest in random items, and without a concept of theft - takes them. The crew gets paranoid, thinking Terry from accounting is stealing their pens again.

Previously mentioned/referenced

Quadpod - Hive-based Crustaceans similar to the Bugs from Starship Troopers.
Cybermen - Outpost Six's Cybernetic monstrosities.
Inhumans - Outpost Six's insane remaining staff kidnapping people for illegal research.
Correctional - Outpost Nine's AI has been reactivated, it is attempt to forcefully convert humans to Cyborgs to become the destroyed prison's new secuirty.

Tools/Weaponry
Sonic Discharger - Pistol sized weapon that produces a short ranged Sonic discharge. Harmless to humans and Skrell, but is deadly to Europian lifeforms. Carried by the prudent explorer.
Sonic Rifle - Heavier ranged version of the Discharger, originally marketed as a hunting tool. They are now a rare sight, with a few held by the System Authority and the rest being lost to the dark Outposts.
Fusion Welder - Self-sufficient welder, research item. Does not require welding goggles due to connecting material together on a molecular level, it also cannot ignite plasma.
"Raptor" Lightweight Mech - Small and speedy preasurised mech suit, much faster underwater than standard preasure suits at the cost of requiring a power source.
Beepsky 2.0 - What's cheaper than a paying Secuirty staff? A beepsky. What's cheaper than a computer processor? A monkey brain....

lets steal some ideas from lifeweb
lets have crawling, holding stuff while fallen down, and also have a hunger and thrist system that actually matters to your characters health.
Also lets make it so you can sever someones carotid artery, (carotid artery 5ever).

Zomg, for the engineers, (maintenence doods) you should be able to clip on a radio to your jumpsuit as an accessory, so you like have a radio attached to your jumpsuit.
then everyone else has to meet eachother, and medical has to use the phones in medical. And of course command people have radios.
Also have this:
